Week 5 Start/Sit: Fire Up Trevor Lawrence, Fade the 49ers Receivers, and Stop Overthinking Your Studs
Our model crunched the matchups. Here are the plays that win you Week 5, the names to bench, and the injury landmines to watch before lineup lock.

Welcome to Week 5, where your bench is full of regret and your waiver claims all failed. Let's fix that.
Everything below comes from our Week 5 model (snapshot Friday, Oct. 9, 8 p.m. PT, PPR scoring). The short version of how it works: we blend ESPN's weekly projection with season average and recent form, then adjust for how many fantasy points each defense has allowed to that position. Full breakdown in our rankings explainer.
Rule No. 1: start your studs. Jahmyr Gibbs at Arizona and Brock Bowers at New England both draw tough matchups in our model. Doesn't matter. Start them. Benching a first-rounder for a matchup is how leagues are lost.
Injury landmines (read this first)
Last updated Oct. 9, 2026, 8:35 p.m. PT. Statuses can change through Sunday morning.
- Lamar Jackson (BAL): OUT (ankle). Tyler Huntley starts Sunday night at Atlanta, per NFL.com. Downgrade every Raven a notch.
- Zay Flowers (BAL): Questionable (foot), per the Ravens.
- Ja'Marr Chase (CIN): Questionable and still in the concussion protocol despite a full Friday practice. Tee Higgins: Questionable (groin/neck), per Bengals.com and Bengals Wire.
- Justin Jefferson (MIN): Questionable (ankle). The Vikings plan to test him Saturday, per ESPN and the AP.
- Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith (PHI): OUT, per CBS Sports.
- Caleb Williams (CHI): Questionable, but Tyson Bagent is expected to start, per the AP.
Note: Tampa Bay and Dallas already played Thursday, so they're off this list.
START 'EM
Trevor Lawrence, QB, Jaguars (vs. PHI). Our model has him as a top-12 QB this week with an Illegal Motion Proj of 16.9, and Philly's defense grades as a friendly matchup for quarterbacks. Lawrence has been quiet lately. This is a get-right spot.
Aaron Rodgers, QB, Steelers (vs. IND). Rostered in only 18% of ESPN leagues, yet he projects nearly even with Lawrence in our numbers (16.9). Indy is one of the most generous matchups for QBs in our model. Streaming gold.
Jameson Williams, WR, Lions (at ARI). Arizona ranks among the easiest WR matchups we have. Big-play upside in a dome. Fire him up as a WR3.
Wan'Dale Robinson, WR, Titans (vs. HOU). By our numbers, Houston has allowed the most fantasy points to receivers this season (No. 32 of 32 in our matchup rank). Robinson's steady target share makes him a sneaky flex.
Mike Gesicki, TE, Bengals (at MIA). Miami is a cushy tight end matchup in our model, and with Chase and Higgins both questionable, the targets have to go somewhere. Rostered in only about 25% of leagues.
SIT 'EM (or at least temper expectations)
Deebo Samuel Sr. and Mike Evans, WRs, 49ers (at SEA). Seattle grades as the toughest matchup in football for wide receivers in our model. Both are borderline WR3s at best this week. If you've got a comparable option in a better spot, use it.
Brock Purdy, QB, 49ers (at SEA). He's still a starter, he's been great, but our matchup adjustment knocks him down. Don't expect a ceiling game.
Tony Pollard, RB, Titans (vs. HOU). Houston's run defense is the opposite of its pass defense: one of the toughest in our matchup rankings. Pollard is a low-end flex.
Tucker Kraft, TE, Packers (vs. CHI). The Bears are one of the stingiest teams against tight ends in our numbers. If you streamed Gesicki-types before, this is the week to do it again.
Dalton Kincaid, TE, Bills (at LAR). Same story. The Rams' defense has been ridiculous, and tight ends have felt it. More on that game in our Rams-Bills preview.
The coin-flip zone
Garrett Wilson (NYJ) vs. Christian Watson (GB): both draw tough matchups in our model. Wilson's recent form is steadier, so he gets the nod.
Bijan Robinson (ATL) vs. anyone: Baltimore is a tough run defense in our numbers, but Bijan is Bijan. See Rule No. 1.

Our take (opinion): the biggest mistake people make in October is chasing last week's box score. Matchups and volume win weeks. Trust the process, check the inactives 90 minutes before kickoff, and may your opponent's kicker shank everything.
